Japanese macaques fighting in an aviary
54
A very serious fight between little macacamai until someone older separates them. Japanese macaques live in groups of up to 20 individuals. Each group has its own habitat. The leader of the group is a large strong male, and not the most aggressive, but the most intelligent and influential. The decisive role in the choice of leader is played by the main female, or a group of females, between which there are the closest social ties. Pregnancy lasts from 170 to 180 days. Usually one cub is born. Twins are rare. The weight of the baby at birth is about 500 grams. Coastal monkeys swim and can even dive in search of algae. Japanese macaques are trainable, in winter, they can even make snowballs.
