May 16, 1982 Soviet Defeat in the Panjshir Valley

On May 16, 1982 the Soviet Union's 108th Motor Rifle Division, 201st Motor Rifle Division, and 105 Guards Airborne Divisions, with a Soviet Afghan Army motorised infantry division, and approximately 10,000 Afghan troops attacked the Panjshir Valley. Even with massive air power and artillery support, this force failed and was defeated by only 3,000 fighters from the Panjshir Valley, without American military support.
