Gatekeeping: a necessary evil??

Many times fans are called toxic, racist, bigots, etc. for defending their beloved fandoms with incredible fervor. Could it be that this passionate defense known as "gatekeeping" isn't in itself an attempt to exclude anyone, but more so an attempt at protecting the heart and soul of every IP that has existed for decades?
