The Maldives, formally the Republic of Maldives, is an archipelagic state within the Indian subcontinent of Asia, arranged within the Indian Sea. It lies southwest of Sri Lanka and India, approximately 700 kilometers (430 mi) from the Asian continent's territory. The chain of 26 atolls extends from Ihavandhippolhu Atoll within the north to Addu Atoll within the south (over the Equator).
