Pigeons have been used as food, pets, holy animals, post carriers, and more for thousands of years. Around 5,000 years ago, pigeons were first referenced in Mesopotamia. They were kept in vast numbers by the Ancient Egyptians, who sacrificed tens of thousands at a time for ritualistic purposes. A swarm of thousands of pigeons accompanied Akbar the Great. Because they were not native to the Americas, they were transported there some 400 years ago. Around the 18th century, fancy pigeons were popular, and breeders greatly expanded the variety of pigeons.
