Psalm 19 Hymn of the Believer IV
(Micah reading ESV, RSV shown)
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;
9 the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
11Moreover by them is thy servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
The law is perfect and as such it revives the soul.
The several ways the glory of God (restated terms for Law) comes to man with blessings
1. Testimony of the Lord, His Word and word, revives the soul
2. Precepts of the Lord, rejoicing the heart
3. Commandment of the Lord, enlightening the eyes (both physical & spiritual)
4. Fear of the Lord, beginning of wisdom which is clean & enduring forever
5. Ordinances of the Lord, true. We can rely upon them.
Terminology wonderful. Rules & regulations life joyful what not to do. More fulfilling in the long. Deigned to bring vibrance to life.
Hard in our natural walk to find laws that do not feel imposed upon. Law is strictly for our own good. God does not get anything from our obeying them in His Divinity. Law given for us for a more vibrant life and life has more meaning.
Connected nature, all humanity beloved of God. Caring with one another, rather than greed, selfless generosity, loving neighbor rather than working the system.
All these ways bring relationship with God and joy (fine gold, dripping & sweet honey) but wait there is more, a warning against evil and sorrow. How many times do people blame the Lord for misery in their lives when it is their own poor choices that are the culprit?
11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
To be thy Lord’s servant is to walk in His ways. David realizing the frailty of his own heart acknowledges his sinfulness.
1. Hidden faults
2. Presumption
We have a tendency our own frailties & ignorance. By downplaying them we become presumptuous especially when comparing with our neighbor. Our measure is Christ not our neighbor.
We all have blind spots refuse to acknowledge, then find ways to justify them. God help me to know and to change.
If David guards against these two problems, then he shall be blameless of great transgressions. It is from small transgressions major sins follow.
