The Delta Hospice Story

In 2018 the Delta Hospice Society was told by the BC government that they needed make provision for residents of their 10 bed facility to be killed onsite through medically assisted death (if they wanted it), or the facility lose their funding and donor built facility. This notice came after the Trudeau government legalized medical assistance in dying in 2016 and Fraser Health established a policy months later.

Hospice founder Nancy Macy refused to allow it, explaining that ending the lives of residents was incompatible with palliative care and violated the hospices constitution which stated it will not hasten a patients death.

The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association and the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians backed the hospice’s stance, stating in a joint statement that medical assistance in dying is fundamentally different than palliative care whose whole purpose is to compassionately care for the elderly with dignity in their final years of life.

Spokespersons from the society have also expressed that they desire to maintain a space for those needing palliative care but who are afraid to go to facilities who are pro-MAID.

After years of battle in the courts over the issue, the hospice has taken blow after blow and now been evicted from its facility, which was located on leased government land but which the society built with over seven million dollars of donor funds that they raised.

In spite of the hardship, the society is vowing to rebuild.
