A distinctive feature of this breed of cat is independence. They can keep people away from them, not allow themselves to be petted, and in general impose their will on the inhabitants of the apartment.

But as noted, these cats are very touching and reverent towards small children and willingly cooperate to play with older children.

Maine Coons are very smart and good at remembering commands, just like dogs. Also they clearly detect intonations and changes in the mood of the owner, while showing uncharacteristic for animals tact and understanding. Maine Coon will not pester you with communication, or to demand attention, if the owner is not in the mood.
