Couple of pigeons bathing in rain
Birds will perch and bunker down rather than fly around during a rainfall. The vast majority of birds are water resistant. Their feathers, in combination with the oil produced by their preen glands, keep them somewhat dry. So, why aren't birds able to fly during downpours? It's more than just getting soaked. It's possible that the air, not the water, is to blame.
Storms alter the medium through which flight takes place: the air. When the air pressure is low, storms are more likely to occur. Low-pressure systems have a lower air density. Birds, on the other hand, need thick air to take flight because it supplies them with the necessary aerodynamic lift. Rain and hot temperatures add water molecules to the air as well.
