Solomon's Message - Futility or Hope?

The old 1960's rock music group The Byrds had a huge hit song based upon the Book of Ecclesiastes written by King Solomon. Their song indicated, as did Solomon, there is a time and season for everything under the heavens. Was that message one of vanity, futility or hope?
