Temperature Control: Preparing for a Crisis or Emergency

VIDEO 8 – TEMPERATURE CONTROL: PREPARING FOR A CRISIS OR EMERGENCY

Staying Warm
• Clothing: layers, thermal underwear
• Footwear: wool socks, heavy duty shoes that protect feet from getting wet
• Keep extremities warm: knit caps, gloves
• Safety: make sure you have a fire extinguisher, battery-operated smoke detectors, and you’re very fortunate if you have a wood-burning stove or fireplace, but get chimney cleaned
• No stove or fireplace? Close off parts of house & congregate in common areas together, blankets, hot water bottles

Keeping Cool
• Do chores early in morning or late in evening
• Drink plenty of water
• Use umbrellas and wide-brimmed hats
• Wear light-colored clothing
• Misters & wet cloths
• Home: use blinds and drapes to your advantage, open and shut depending on position of the sun; take advantage of early morning breezes by opening up the house; heat rises so stay downstairs; cook outside
