Antisemitisme in Europa
Drie Duitse programmamakers - Joachim Schroeder, Sophie Hafner en Matthias Benzing - hebben maandenlang gefilmd in Duitsland en Frankrijk om de nieuwe Jodenhaat in beeld te krijgen. Van de bedreigde Joden in het Franse Sarcelles en de actievoerders voor een boycot van Israël, die dat doen in samenwerking met antisemitische rappers en leden van de extreemrechtse gemeenschap in Berlijn. En, niet te vergeten, de toenemende groep antizionisten binnen de Duitse Protestantse Kerken en de progressieve partij Die Linke. De film laat verschillende aspecten van deze moderne Jodenhaat zien.

Zo is anno 2018 een belangrijk deel van Europa solidair met de vijanden van Israël, de PLO en later Hamas en de Arabische landen. En ofschoon het hier om een conflict gaat dat zich afspeelt in het Midden-Oosten, zijn het de Europese Joden die als eerste worden geraakt door de gevolgen van deze westerse saamhorigheid: een antisemitische grimas die zich steeds vaker laat zien. Waarbij een groot deel van de samenleving wegkijkt en onverschillig blijft. Is antizionisme het nieuwe antisemitisme? De drie makers keken ook rond in Israël en Gaza om te controleren of wat de Westerse nieuwsconsument zoal over het Palestijnse vraagstuk te horen krijgt, strookt met de werkelijkheid ter plaatse.

Al zijn er geen ghetto’s meer in Europa, toch bevindt een aanzienlijk aantal Joodse Europeanen zich nog steeds in een sociaal isolement waarin ze antisemitische aanvallen en aanslagen moeten trotseren. 'Uitverkoren en uitgesloten' laat deze pijnlijke kant van de 21-eeuwse westerse samenleving zien. Zo pijnlijk dat de film aanvankelijk zelfs niet uitgezonden zou worden, door de opdrachtgevers: het Duitse televisiestation WDR en de Franse tv-zender Arte. Na voltooiing weigerden beide tv-zenders de film te programmeren. Het programma zou niet aan hun kwaliteitseisen hebben voldaan. Na een hoogoplopend publiek debat in Duitsland en Frankrijk besloten de stations alsnog tot uitzending. Tegelijkertijd werd op de internetpagina’s van de televisiestations de inhoud van de film in twijfel getrokken.

'Chosen and excluded' shows this painful side of 21st century Western society. So painful that the film was initially not even broadcast, by the clients: the German television station WDR and the French TV channel Arte. After completion both TV channels refused to program the film. The program would not have met their quality requirements. After a high-level public debate in Germany and France, the stations decided to broadcast. At the same time, the content of the film was questioned on the internet pages of the television stations.
