The Horror of Green Funerals

The Catholic Archbishop of Dubuque, Iowa, has written a letter urging the Faithful to reject traditional burial methods in favor of…forgive me…liquifying a corpse in order to be less “offensive” to the earth and the environment. Making reference to the fact that two people die every second worldwide and the 2.5 million persons die annually in the United States, the Archbishop declared that this makes burial practices a significant environmental issue. I’m sure that Greta Thunberg would be pleased. Not wanting to offend Pachamama or the Earth Mother goddess, the prelate laments the present practice of burial and even cremation. The Archbishop indicated that more than 130 square miles of land would be necessary for in-ground burials of those predicted to die in the next two decades. Combine this misuse of land with the consumption of natural resources used to make coffins and burial vaults, as well as the potential pollution of ground water, makes it essential that transition from burial to liquifying remains. The Archbishop further critiqued the process of cremation, a practice traditionally forbidden for Catholics, saying that each cremation uses about 30 gallons of fuel, and both the burning and the body itself release pollutants into the air. Praising the Catholic Church for being a leader in the use of green burial, the Archbishop proposed “alkaline hydrolysis” as the “green” alternative.
