In olden times the Apprentice was a callow youth bound out to a Master whom he was to serve in return for instruction in the Craft. One could expect little enlightenment from the actual apprentice, nor may we consistently expect to gain much, if any, insight into the secret doctrine from the degree of that name. By its very nature it cannot be expected to yield much of a spiritual nature. Yet it is the first step, and the first step must always be taken before subsequent steps can be taken
