American Seeks Political Asylum in Freer Countries?

This is stunning news to me as someone who grew up in an America where people fleeing totalitarianism and political persecution came here, to the US, the shining city on the hill and beacon of liberty. Sadly that country has gone by the wayside recently as the federal regime routinely persecutes and incarcerates for political purposes.
