My two favorite improvisational rock drummers, Keith Moon and John Bonham, were constantly feeding ideas from their guitar players, the same way Jazz drummers feed off the piano or horn players. The exchange of musical ideas going back and forth know as Orchestration on behalf or the soloist is a primary task of any drummer. This is why it's is so important to practice not just rudiment and reading studies but to also develop improvisational ears.
