(CNN) Doctors don't know yet exactly how well the current Covid-19 vaccines protect people against the new Omicron variant that is now in the US, but what they do know is that people shouldn't wait to get a vaccine or booster.

"Getting the maximum protection now is more important than ever and it's not just because of Omicron," US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy told CNN Tuesday.
