Nuclear Weapons not as Powerful as Led to Believe

Yet another tool in the fear machine.
By all means, assuming such weapons of mass destruction do exist (unlike in Iraq), are they as devastating as they are made out to be? Or is this just another tactic to keep people scared and therefore more willing to allow immoral wars, etc?
