Should you tell people to ignore the things you've said and done when in the public eye (or that have become known where your "private life" is concerned)?

Is that really fair or reasonable?

Why is it that folks think they deserve a pass, when they're running for, or wanting to be appointed to, a public position?

Do you really think it's reasonable for folks to ignore who you've been (most particularly publicly, but even what's well know about the "private you")?
