Heaven and Earth Shall Pass Away, Matthew 24:35

Was Jesus saying that Heaven and Earth would pass away in the first century? Obviously that didn't happen. So what does Matthew 24:35 really mean, when Christ says "Heaven and Earth shall pass away?"
