Escaping Metropolis (A Song of Rebellion)

(My apologies to those that can actually sing.)

The Ordinary World in every story is a place of control. It is a land of labels and experts. Those that dwell there are kept in a state of lack and victimhood in order to keep them from beginning their Journey.

Once the Hero returns, they are often punished for trying to help those still trapped by the lies of the Ordinary World. The old ways of thinking always defend themselves (cognitive dissonance) and many times the Hero is martyred in their attempts to save others. This is true in story because it is true in us. Prophets are never welcome in their hometown...

Citizens of the Ordinary World are considered "good" when they obey and are punished when they think for themselves. The Hero learns that everything they know is wrong -- that obedience is doing what you are told despite what is right and morality is doing what is right despite what you are told. It is a hard lesson, and one every human on earth must face.

There is only one story. There is only one person in that story. And that person is you.
