A Giraffe Named Daphne
A Giraffe Named Daphne.
On my last trip to Nairobi, Kenya, my friends and I had the distinct pleasure of visiting the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an African animal orphanage in Nairobi National Park. The mission of this charitable trust is the protect wildlife and the preserving the natural habitats of East
This has to be at the top of my most memorable experiences. To see with my own eyes, the work being conducted by this charitable foundation is heartwarming. Saving these magnificent animals from certain death is a most important gift to humanity. After all, hippos, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, etc., have been roaming around their home, the savannas of Africa, for ions and ions.
Africa. Such a worthy cause.
In addition, the Sheldrick Trust has entered into anti-poaching partnerships with the Kenya Wildlife Service to protect Kenya’s threatened wildlife. In addition, they are in a partnership with the Mara Elephant Project to detect and prevent illegal activities such as stealing ivory tusks from elephants and poaching rhino horns. These teams of dedicated professionals have both aerial and canine support to assist in the prevention of illegal activities. The Kenyan Wildlife Service actively conducts ambushes and arrests the guilty. That is a very good thing and very much needed to assure the survival of animals threatened by a large number of ardent criminals.
A deep sense of gratitude was felt as I observed the personnel at this wildlife trust. So many dedicated people working diligently to save so many animals. Their love of these creatures was obvious as I watched the tender loving care being administered. It is heartwarming to see so many magnificent animals at the orphanage. So grateful there is trust dedicated to their well-being and survival.
Each day the little elephants are taken out of the orphanage and led into Nairobi National Park where they roam free for the day (see picture below). Fortunately, we were there when this parade of pachyderms returned for the evening. Hard to describe how much I enjoyed witnessing the tender loving care being given to these elephants.
Every single day of the year volunteers from this Trust are roaming around Africa looking for animals in distress including Elephants, Giraffes, Hippos, White and Black Rhinos. These rescuers have untangled animals from snare wires. Without being found, these entrapped creatures have no chance to survive. Thanks to the very dedicated Sheldrick Wildlife personnel, these animals are given another chance at life.
This was fun…during my visit, and for a small donation, I had the treat of having a Giraffe named after me. So somewhere halfway around the world, there is a Giraffe named Daphne being cared for by a group of dedicated professionals. And, “Giraffe Daphne” has every chance of surviving because of the loving care being given her by so many loving people at the orphanage who are protecting and saving her. That is such a happy thought!
