This is my Marlin lever gun Model 336 in .30 caliber Winchester. "30-30" stands for a specific .30 caliber round with 30 grains of gun powder when it was first coined by Marlin.

Fairly compact as far as riles go with a 20" barrel and a thin profile, but it is heavy. I carry this in a padded scabbard that I strap to my Bug Out Bag.

If you opt for a lever action, I recommend one with side ejection like the Marlin (versus top) in case you want to mount a scope on top.

No scope here. Iron sights work well. (Elevator was on backwards when I bought it...reversed and zeroed in at "2 notches" up @ 25yds at indoor range). Simplicity is the goal here for me with a hunting caliber that will take down large game. The newer "elastomer" rounds enable a pointed bullet with flatter trajectory and longer range vs. the older snub nose type.

These guns are made in several calibers. The 30-30 packs quite a punch and is meant more for hunting. For more tame, cheaper, recreational shooting, I'd go for a .22 as they are a lot of fun.
