William, Deadra and Andrea Hurt were teenagers in June 2012 when they were arrested in connection with the death of Marcus Golike – a homeless man and foster brother to their mother who was found dead in the Ohio River.

The lawsuit claimed Evansville officers coerced a false confession from William Hurt after a four-hour interrogation without an attorney present.

Charges against Deadra Hurt were eventually dropped, and police ultimately decided not to pursue any against Andrea Hurt. William Hurt was charged with murder, robbery resulting in bodily injury and criminal confinement. He refused a plea deal and was acquitted after a short trial in 2013.
