Rhodesian Ridgebacks aren't barky dogs by nature nor are they aggressive but rather, aloof & quiet, until they have to protect you, so it is handy to be able to ask them (with a silent command), to bark around unsavoury types who take their quiet aloofness as timidity & you as an easy mark for mugging, rather than have things escalate and those unsavoury type discover just how protective they can be.
