Setrap Chen is a Dharmapala, a protector of the Buddhist practitioners and Buddhist doctrine. The practice of this Dharmapala can be traced back to Bodhgaya and Nalanda in India when Buddhist monasteries thrived there. When Loden Sherab was to leave India to spread the Dharma to the Land of Snows, Tibet, it was Setrap who agreed to accompany him.

Setrap Chen was practiced at Sangpu Neutog Monastery and then later at Ganden Shartse Monastery. The Sakya lineage propitiates this Dharmapala, Ngari Khamtsen in Drepung as well. In 2021, the practice of Setrap Chen is world wide, as the Buddha Dharma spreads to the four corners of the Earth.
