Lunatic Logic: The Fine Line Between Mystical Experience and Madness

Meaningful coincidences, "inner guides," (voices in your head) attributing meaning to strings of numbers (apophenia is the tendency to perceive meaningful connections between unrelated things, including numbers, and is characteristic of the beginning stages of schizophrenia.) a sense of destiny, inflated ego/conflated ego, bliss, hysteria. These are all experiences shared by people that are enduring psychotic breaks, and also people that are undergoing spiritual illumiGnation. Not only are the differences in presentation of the symptomology subtle, the legitimate, once-benign, spiritual awaking can even devolve into a psychotic break under certain circumstances. The Devil, as it were, is in the details.
Some degree of disorder is a prerequisite for any new order to emerge, and this holds true of all natural systems, including our own soul and psyche. As Tim Leary once observed, "In order to learn to one's headu one must go out of one's mind." But this is a delicate process, it is a highway with few rules, few signs, and no dividing lines. As spirituality ascends in popularity, the deficit of qualified, well-meaning guides and teachers has grown all too clear. In a society in decline, in the midst, even, of a global chaostrophe of potentially terminal magnitude, one in which critical thinking is not only not taught, but actively discouraged, the muddy waters of mysticism can pose as much of a threat as a saving grace. Combine that with the fear motivated desire to escape into the kinds of fantasy pedaled by love and light, New Age, opportunists, and we have a recipe for wasted effort on the part of many earnest seekers, and even outright disaster. With this Livestream I will offer what wisdom I have "gathered from coincidence," as Bob Dylan once sang.
Gnosis and a connection to Spirit is indeed the antidote to the atom-bomb, but a new, more mature, realistic, conception of what that means, and what it entails, is essential for efficacy. We had better start running, cant stand and wait; the sun is hot and the hour so late.
