Production of the M4A1 tank began in February 1942 after the British placed an order,
it would have had a cast nose, turret and a one-piece cast hull, with a 75mm cannon.
And was manufactured by Lima Locomotive Works.
These tanks were designed on British specs and were fitted with the Continental R-975 air-cooled radial engine.
The M4A1 would be replaced on December 1943, by the M4A1(76)w, which received a more
recent 76 mm M1 main gun,
A new turret with a new commander cupola featuring 6 prismatic vision blocks and a new modernized Continental R975-C1 engine.
Additional armor plate was often welded in front of the driver and co/driver’s position at the front of the tank and at the side to give them greater protection.
Later version would be identical to the M4A1(76)W, but had the E8 Horizontal Volute Suspension System.

The M4A1(76)w Sherman was a pretty successful vehicle and had an efficient gun.
After the war, it would be used by countries like The Netherlands and France.

This Sherman was probably one of the early Sherman tanks used in Normandy in late July, 1944.
This M4A1(76) W Sherman with nickname AMBOY was placed in 2004 in the town of La Roche-en-Ardenne as a memorial, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

It replaced an M26 Pershing tank that was on the same spot.
That M26 Pershing went to Le Camp Roi Albert in March.

This Sherman was knocked out during the Battle of the Bulge, it was hit by a German howitzer leaving a big howl in the front of the superstructure and it was hit two times with an anti tank gun.
One hit in the gun mantlet that went straight through and one in the superstructure the impact killed the crew instantly.
