Were sports purposely invented to distract the masses?

Maybe not invented for that purpose, but generally used for it. Sports, as religion, art, music and other human manifestations have roots in human impulses or needs. You would expect them to survive and evolve in any shape or form humans or society takes.

It just so happens that, these being human natural expressions, they are susceptible to manipulation and misuse. And the most logical manipulation of human emotion a government can take (and always take) is the use of anything human prefer to control them. Sports and religion are perfect examples, albeit not the only ones.
