Dogs are able to differentiate foreign languages, says study.
More than understanding calls, requests, orders, and intentions in "their" own language, dogs are able to tell when someone is speaking in a foreign language, and differentiate it from their "home language" - or the original language of their human "owners.
This is the conclusion of pioneering Hungarian research, recently published in the scientific journal NeuroImage, investigating 18 animals: the research is linked to the Laboratory of Neuroethology of Communication, which studies animal behavior, at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest.
"Dogs are really good in the human environment," said scientist Laura Cuaya, a researcher at the university and author of the study. "We found that dogs' brains can detect speech and differentiate languages without any explicit training. I think this reflects how connected dogs are to humans," she said.
The research monitored the brain activities of the 18 animals against various words in various languages, without using terms that are familiar to the dogs, to effectively "isolate" the languages.
According to the research, different areas of the dogs' brains reacted to different languages - especially between the language the animal is used to, and languages it does not know.
Certainly, this ability to be constant social learners gives dogs an advantage as a species, offering them a greater ability to understand their environments.
