Why Did Conservatives Ever Think the FBI Was Good?

The FBI of course does "good" things," but why do Republicans and conservatives think that only recently the FBI fell from grace? The first director of the FBI stayed in power for thirty-five years because he could blackmail elected members of our government, is that the foundation of a benevolent organization?
