Using a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Without a Phone Line
In this video, Jorge from Alarm Grid explains how no phone line is required to use the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus for monitoring service. A Qolsys IQ Panel 2 has a built-in cellular communicator and a built-in WIFI card for connecting with the Alarm.com Servers. A phone line cannot be used with the IQ2.
Phone service once served as the only way to connect an alarm system with a central station for monitoring service. But thanks to newer technology, phone line communication is largely obsolete. Today, most security systems use cellular and/or IP connectivity for alarm monitoring service. In fact, most new systems on the market today cannot be set up to use phone line connectivity. There are many reasons why phone lines have fallen out of favor for security systems. For one, telephone communication is very slow. This means that it will take more time for the central station to receive an alarm notification when phone line connectivity is used. Another problem with phone line service is that it is unreliable. Often, the signals sent out from a system using phone line communication will fail to reach the intended destination. Lastly, phone line communication is very easy to tamper with, and a cut phone line can disable an entire security system.
The Qolsys IQ Panel 2 is built to use dual-path communication with both cellular and IP. Cellular and IP connectivity are both significantly more reliable than phone line connectivity. Per Alarm.com requirements, you must activate the cellular communicator inside a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 System in order to use it for alarm monitoring service. Most users will also add the system to their local WIFI networks, as doing so will not increase their monthly monitoring fee. And having two communication paths established can be very useful if one path was to go down for whatever reason. Since WIFI is a little bit faster than cellular, it will generally serve as the primary communication path. However, cellular is more relaible than WIFI, and it is less likely to go down. This makes cellular service the perfect backup to WIFI connectivity.
