Honeywell Panels Compatible With the SEM

In this video, Jorge talks about the Honeywell Panels that are compatible with the Alarm.com System Enhancement Module, also referred to as the SEM. This is a cellular communicator that allows a Honeywell Security Panel to communicate across a cellular network and connect with the Alarm.com servers.

The reason why the an SEM is a big deal is because it is really the only way for a Honeywell Panel to connect with the Alarm.com Interactive Service. Normally, a Honeywell Panel would connect with the Total Connect 2.0 platform instead. Total Connect 2.0 is very similar to Alarm.com, and it offers basically all of the same features. But a user might want to use Alarm.com because they already have ADC Security Cameras or because ADC offers a smart home integration that TC2 does not.

There are only a small number of Honeywell Panels that will work with the SEM. These compatible systems include most of the VISTA P-Series Systems and their First Alert Panel equivalents. The SEM devices cannot be used with wireless Honeywell Panels, such as the Lyric and LYNX Touch. There is also a different version of the SEM designed for DSC PowerSeries Panels. That SEM model will not work with Honeywell Panels. If you are using an SEM with a Honeywell Panel, make sure that it is the correct model.

As for the capabilities of the SEM, its biggest draw is that it's a cellular communicator that allows the panel to connect with Alarm.com. Cellular communication is great for alarm systems due to its supreme reliability and overall fast speeds. Cellular service almost never goes down or becomes unavailable, even during power outages. This makes it perfect for alarm systems that need to work reliably. Additionally, the SEM also doubles as a Z-Wave controller, which is great for users looking to get into home automation.

Note: Jorge says that 15P/20P panels revision 2.0 or below cannot be PROM upgraded. It's actually any PROM Chip with a revision beginning with a "1" that cannot be upgraded. PROM Chips beginning with a "2" or higher can be upgraded.
