Did you know there is an apple that tastes like a grape? On this episode we bring you the grapple.

The grapple or grape-l is the registered brand name invented by Todd Snyder at his Nursery in Washington . Being Fuji or Gala apple the grapple is the result of that fuji or gala soaked in food-grade solution to give it a grape taste. The concentrated grape flavour used, methyl anthranilate is an artificial flavour that attempts to mimic the taste of a concord grape. Apples are soaked in this chemical mixed with water which eventually becomes absorbed by the apple, taking on the flavour.

This chemical is found other places like in Kool aid and chewing gum. Methyl anthranilate or bird shield is often used by farmers to protect their crop of cherries or apples from birds. The fragrance is not one enjoyed by birds and makes for an easy deterrent.

Washington Gala or Fuji Apples are used in the creation of this product because they absorb the flavour best which equates to a concentration ranging from 1% to 4%. The apples aren’t genetically altered and the grape flavour adds no additional sugar or calories.

It took Todd 3 years to perfect the process before rolling it out to the market in 2011.

Sold in these plastic apple containers isn’t to make them look special it’s actually a regulation by the Washington Department of Agriculture as they’re considered a processed product.

People who enjoy the artificial grape smell and flavour will love these apples, for the rest of us myself included will find them to taste very artificial. There’s no getting around the soap like smell of methyl anthranilate which doesn’t exactly exhilarate----- the taste buds.
