Can I use a Lyric security system w/o monitoring?
In this video, Jorge demonstrates how the Honeywell Lyric Controller can be used without monitoring services. Without monitoring, the Lyric Controller can only be used as a local sounder and as a local Z-Wave controller. Overall, an unmonitored Lyric can be useful if a user is almost always on-site.
If a Honeywell Lyric Controller is not monitored, security sensors can still be learned-in, and the system can still be armed and disarmed. If an alarm is triggered for the system, the panel can still produce a siren, and any programmed sirens will still activate. This is helpful for letting on-side occupants know about a burglary, fire or medical alarm.
However, the downside is that an unmonitored Lyric System will have no way of reporting an alarm event to those who are not on-site. If a user is not near their system, they will not hear the alarm, and they will not be notified about the potential emergency. Additionally, the system will not be able to send a signal to a central station to report the alarm for automatic dispatch.
Basically, the Lyric System may be technically in alarm, but anyone who isn't on-site will have no way of knowing about it. So unless a user is almost always on-site with their system, it is strongly recommended that they receive some type of monitoring service. Central station monitoring will allow them to receive automatic emergency dispatch, while self-monitoring will require them to contact the authorities after being alerted to an alarm via text or email notification.
Without monitoring, a Lyric Controller can still be used as a local Z-Wave controller. Any Z-Wave operation will need to be completed directly from the panel. A user can set up rules and scenes from the panel to have their Z-Wave devices activate automatically based on a schedule or with certain system events. However, if a user adds monitoring services, home automation can be done remotely using the Total Connect 2.0 service.
It is also technically possible to use Apple HomeKit without monitoring. This allows a user to control their Lyric System using voice commands sent through the SIRI voice assistant. However, the Lyric System will need to be running the proper firmware version to make this possible. And the only way to upgrade the firmware on a Honeywell Lyric Controller is with active monitoring service.
