What is a Smokejumper?

Did you know there is a job where someone will parachute down into the middle of the wilderness to put out fire? On this episode we unveil the smokejumper.

Smokejumpers are firefighters that jump from a plane into remote areas to fight fires. The Smokejumpers program was created in 1939, 2 years after a wildfire in Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming exploded into a firestorm. The program was an instant success and has been running ever since.

Before smokejumpers, firefighters would have to drive on remote forestry roads then often move in on foot across large distances. While an option for some of the remote fires, there are many places where this simply wasn’t possible and the fires were not controlled.

Training to be a smokejumper is a gruelling process which involves a:
110 and 85 lbs or 50 and 39 kg pack test over 8 miles or 13 km. Training is intense a lot like you’d see in the military. The number of smokejumpers deployed depends on the size of the fire.
2 - 10 people jump to any given fire, they have to make sure the fire is out completely as no one else will come back to check. Now if you are wondering about their equipment, it is airdropped to them in a nice gift wrapped package.

The other place a smoke jumper has their equipment is on them. In their suit is backed full of things like an tent, an extra backpack, a fire retardant blanket to protect them in dire situations, and extra change of clothes and some rope.
