Massive Porcelain Pots

Coming out of China are some pieces of pottery big enough to be a bathtub. On this episode we bring you China’s massive porcelain pots.

Created in Jingdezhen, China porcelain pottery at this scale require up to 3 people to sculpt. The art of pottery has been practiced in Jingdezhen for over 1700 years, it is the porcelain capital of the world. Now with that title comes a lot of dust and particulates in the air. The creation of small clay pots creates enough dust to leave one coughing and sneezing but these enormous pots require workers to wear masks to avoid getting substantial amounts of clay in their lungs. For those of you who have never thrown pottery, it actually takes a lot of strength to pull the clay up, so that why you can see 3 men working together as it requires that much power to shape the clay. Some of these pieces are thrown and sculpted into one big bowl where other pieces are made in 3 different sections. They then stack the pieces, wet the connection points so the pieces make a strong bond. The clay is dried out than goes back onto the table where someone finishes it by polishing it nice and smooth, some pieces will get ornate patterns or famous Chinese figures sculpted right onto the pots. After this is all done someone will painstakingly paint these huge pots and they’ll be sold to customers
