The World's Largest Swimming Pool

Built in South America is a pool so large that a boat is needed to travel across it. On this episode, we’ll uncover the world’s largest pool.
Located 56 miles or 90 kilometers from Santiago the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Algarrobo Chile is home to this feat of engineering. Now a major tourist attraction, this pool measures 3324 feet or 1013 meters long and covers a total area of 19.77 acres or 8 hectares.
Listed as the world’s largest swimming pool in the Guinness World Records in 2006 this pool holds 66 million gallons or 250 million liters of water which is about the same amount as 6000 large backyard residential swimming pools. If you were wondering it takes the average person over 25 minutes to swim one length of this pool.
So how did this pool come to be? It was dreamt up by Fernando Fischmann in 1997. Algarrobo the town he chose this project for has beautiful scenery but the ocean is to cold and dangerous to swim in. It’s even forbidden by the town to swim in the ocean. Mr. Fischmann researched how he could build such a large pool but the technology didn’t exist. Being a biochemist himself he founded a new company Crystal Lagoons Technology where he worked to create and patent a technology that filters ocean water yet still maintaining temperatures within the pool to be 20 degrees fahrenheit or 9 degrees celsius warmer. The cost of construction was around 1.5 billion dollars with an annual maintenance cost of 4 million dollars.
