FAST: China's New Deep Space Radio Telescope

The FAST or the five hundred meter aperture spherical radio telescope was completed in September of 2016 in Dawodang China. This telescope is so big that it has achieved the record for the world’s largest telescope. This 1640 foot or 500 meter telescope dwarfs the next largest one, being the Arecibo telescope in Puerto, Rico. The Arecibo telescope is only able to use ⅔ of its panels at any given point but engineers working on FAST designed the dish to not only be significantly bigger but the dish was morph to use the full array. Now you might be asking what is a radio telescope? It detects and picks up radio signals from all over the galaxy, this one has a cable net system that can morph the dish to capture radio signals coming in from more directions and allows the dish to see three times further into space. Scientists are excited by the new data that will come in as the FAST telescope can pick up signals from thousands of light years away.

Now to construct this massive radio telescope, the Chinese government had to survey thousands of locations then they had to break it down to a short list of 300 pit locations. Choosing the final location of those 300 came down to which location could hold the 500 meter dish the best, had proper water drainage and wasn’t close to civilization (due to radio interference). The location chosen, shown here, was a small village nestled in the mountains that had to road to it. Before construction could even start on the FAST telescope an entire roadway had to be built. Shovels broke ground for the FAST project in March of 2011 and was completed in September 25th, 2016.

Since turning on FAST it has found multiple pulsars from around the galaxy. Pulsars are what’s left from dead stars, it’s essentially the super dense core of the star. These high speed spinning remains of a planet have strong magnetic fields that trigger the emission of radio waves from the poles. With the FAST telescope now, humanity can capture these signals from very far away and study them. Soon the FAST will find pulsars from other galaxies, which has never been done before, which will provide new data from that galaxy as well as the space between galaxies.
