The Amazons are a people of strong female warriors. Heracles' ninth task was to retrieve the belt of Hippolita, queen of the Amazons. Hippolita was willing to give it voluntarily but there was chaos in the process due to Hera's actions so Heracles killed Hippolita instead. Meanwhile, Heracles' friend Theseus, king of Athens, kidnapped Hippolita's sister, Antiope, and brought her to Athens to be his wife.

To save Antiope, avenge Hippolita's death, and take back Hippolita's belt, the Amazons attacked the city of Athens, so Amazonomachia took place: a battle between Athens, led by Theseus with the help of Heracles, against the Amazons led by Orithia. This war is also known as the Attic War.
