So God had commissioned Amos, a farmer, to take a message to the leaders of the Northern Ten Tribes of Israel in Samaria. The Lord was giving them both a warning, and a message of hope. Amos knew that the Lord had chosen Israel to bring the light of truth and hope to the world. But they could not do that task unless they were willing to walk in agreement with God. Disciples of Moses? The Pharisees of Jesus’ day thought of themselves as disciples of Moses. They thought they knew Moses’ message, but they were wrong. Jesus consistently exposed the Pharisees’ hypocrisy. For though they made a great show of fastidiously tithing on thyme leaves, an insignificant matter, in reality they were cheats and cons. They had avoided the fly in their meal, but had proverbially “swallowed the camel.” The politically correct crowd of the time claimed Moses’ message as their own, but the truth was quite the opposite. They lacked the justice, mercy, or faith that Moses had taught. None of these hypocritical people kept the law, the teachings God delivered through Moses. In fact, they were plotting to kill Jesus, the one who was trying to correct their lack of understanding. Jesus had not come to destroy the law or the prophets, but to make the full intent of these writings known. The people would reap what they were sowing, just as Moses prophesied. The apostle Paul encountered similar self-righteous attitudes when confronting the Jewish religious leadership that challenged his ministry to the Gentiles. Jesus Affirms the Role of the Prophet Jesus told his followers that they should not misunderstand his intentions. He did not come to abolish the law or the prophets. Rather, Jesus understood the important role of the prophet in ensuring that God’s purpose would be achieved. This is an inconvenient truth for many who are teaching and governing in harmony with the politically correct notions of our time. Like their ancient predecessors, today’s hypocritical leaders want to look good, but in reality they are pretentious evil-doers from Jesus’ perspective. Jesus castigated the ‘virtue signalling’ frauds of his day by calling them the sons of those who murdered the prophets. But why did their ancestors murder the prophets? And why were the Pharisees willing to murder Jesus, the prophet?

The world is trying to grapple with the events of the past few months in the Middle East, but this is nothing new. Our present situation has a powerful connection to events of the past and the prophecy of Daniel about the Seleucid Empire's attempts to dominate Judea. And the question of good and evil is still the one that should be foremost in our minds. God warns us of the consequences of falling prey to the idea that good and evil are relative, or that good is evil and evil is good. War or Peace? Our world longs for peace and a way out of misery, suffering and death. But is the world willing to make the changes necessary to eradicate war and promote peace? Are there too many people in the world who love war and hate peace? Are there those whose conflicting passions, envy, selfishness and evil deeds make war the natural consequence? The Lord God, the Word of God, makes it clear that there is no peace for the wicked, it is merely a matter of cause and effect. Two millennia ago, Jesus Christ had a message for the people of Judea that resonates in our world. He spoke of the tragedies of his time when the Galileans were murdered by Pilate and the Tower of Siloam fell and many were killed. He also reflected on the nature of Jerusalem and its people in his day and what the future had in store for the people of Israel in Judea. This message harkened back to the Song of Moses written before Israel entered their promised land. It was a song recounting Israel's wilderness experience and prophesying about the future of the people and the land. Many of its verses seem to have a partial fulfillment in our time - a time when the people of Judah have surprisingly returned to their inheritance and been re-established in the land centuries after the destruction of their temple state. Listen to the prophecies of Isaiah and Zechariah to gain insight into what was foretold by God. They reveal a picture of God's justice, his mercy and his purpose for Israel that will be fulfilled in the future. The discovery of the Mt. Ebal Curse tablet has provided evidence of the historicity of the biblical accounts in the books of Deuteronomy and Joshua. Do you know the story? Moses had instructed that the whole nation and the foreigners with them were to proclaim blessings on Mt. Gerizim and curses on Mt. Ebal after they had entered the promised land. The daily news provides abundant examples of people failing to care for those for whom they are responsible. Recently the world witnessed the dramatic failure of the designer of the Titan submersible to put the safety of his crew ahead of his personal ambition. But that is just one of many examples where leaders, politicians, teachers, parents or others in positions of responsibility have failed to care for their people. At the very beginning of the story of humanity, God answers the question of, "Am I my brother's keeper?' with a resounding 'YES!" In fact the prophets continue this message with warnings couched in metaphor to the 'shepherds' who fail to care for their flock. Often God uses the lives of his people as object lessons to teach this important principle. The story of Jacob's sons who sell their pesky younger brother into slavery in Egypt is one such tale. In spite of jealousy, betrayal, and heartache, in the end the brothers learn that their sins will find them out. But they also learn the importance of being their brothers' keeper. Our challenge as God's people is to have his mind and heart and express to others the kind of love that reflects God's nature. We need to ask ourselves if we are being diligent in choosing what God prefers and then taking action for the benefit of those in our care. Malachi, the messenger of God, wrote the Lord's message to rehearse the events and lessons of previous centuries and to foreshadow future events. He wrote in a time when people were becoming complacent and losing hope. The disciples during Jesus' ministry expected Jesus, the Messiah, to fulfill all of the prophecies written about him in the Hebrew scriptures. In fact he had promised them that he had come to fulfill all that was written in the law, the writings, and the prophets. And yet, when quoting the book of Isaiah in the synagogue, Jesus stopped his message half-way through the passage and declared that this portion of the scripture had been fulfilled. Christ had indeed come to bring the 'good news,' but there was more to the prophecy. What remained to be fulfilled did not happen in the first century AD. In fact, it has not yet happened. There are those who would deny the scripture and allegorize away the prophecies saying they are all fulfilled 'spiritually'. But if you believe the reality of scripture then you have the hope that Christ will return as promised to fulfill 'all things.' So what remains to be fulfilled and when will these things happen? Our world is characterized by partisan strife and struggles for power between competing factions in governments, business, and religion. But for those who claim to be Christians Paul reminds us that we have been called to freedom. We have been given freedom from lies and the bondage of the selfish nature to embrace the role of 'our brother's keeper'. God has called us to love our neighbour with an unselfish concern. Jesus, our true Shepherd exemplified this sacrificial love in leading his people. Jesus, in his message to the people at the Feast of Dedication (Chanukah) made a clear distinction between two types of leaders. The hirelings who are self-concerned embracing the culture of death and having little care for those who follow them, and Jesus who came to bring abundant life for his followers. This message resonated with the people who were well versed in the history of the Feast of Dedication and the competing rivalries that subverted the people of God. The history of the time of the Maccabbees as prophesied in the book of Daniel has many parallels to our present age. It was a time of divided loyalties, of intrigue and political instabily, of lies and deception. So it was difficult to know who, if anyone, was caring for the real needs of God's people. Paul and Jesus both refer back to those historic events as types of a future time in which the political situation will make it nigh impossible to know who is speaking the truth. Challenges to Overcome The biblical story of Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and their brothers has many important lessons for those who see the need to restore the paths of God today. They faced many obstacles in fulfilling God's purpose by rebuilding the temple of God at Jerusalem. Though they had received the permission and blessing of King Cyrus of Persia to do the work, the building project was hindered on many fronts. The political powers of the local area felt threatened and were constantly harassing the workers. Some of the workers became weary and turned to their own business interests. Others, seeing the enormity of the task before them and feeling discouraged by very real impediments, just wanted to give up. Others lamented that they were not able to replicate the majesty and beauty of the previous temple. Some wondered if the temple would ever be restored. The church of God is in a state of disrepair as a result of decades of attacks from without and within. This has divided the people of God and limited their effectiveness in performing God's will. And what is God's will? Often referred to as the 'Great Commission,' the will of God is that his people should 'teach all nations (ethnic groups) to observe all the things that were commanded in the scriptures.' And in so doing, they would make more disciples to carry on this work. Christ would be working through his people, generation after generation, and this work would continue to be done until the time of Christ's return. The prophet Isaiah wrote to encourage the people of God with a message of hope in restoring the paths and rebuilding the ruins. This was all predicated on the people returning to God and re-establishing justice based on the truth of scripture. History offers us the examples of those who put the pursuit of the truth and doing what was right, ahead of personal ambition or ideology. General Robert E. Lee was such a person, one who was willing to suffer, if need be, to do what was right and honourable. God has a message for those who would take up the mantle of leadership of God's people. It is not a comforting message. God is testing all of his people to discern whether they will listen to his counsel or not. Jeremiah the prophet, in a time of great national turmoil, was given a message to deliver to the people. God likened the nation to two baskets of figs, one was good and the other was rotten. God explains how he would preserve the good figs, those who trusted him and did what was right. He also warned the 'rotten figs' that unless they changed their corrupt, self-serving ways they would be destroyed. There are lessons today for those in positions of leadership who are building their 'palaces' with slave labour, abusing their people and defying God's will. There is also a message of hope for those who trust God and follow his teachings. It is time we all consider where we stand and how God will work in our lives.
