There are times during devotions, or Bible reading when unexpectedly the Holy Spirit shines His light on a passage. It is unmistakable. It has happened to me many times so I know it is Him. There is nothing like it.
Today I read the words in Psalm 20: 2-4, "Thou hast given him his heart's desire, and hast not withholden the request of his lips. Selah. For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head. He asked life of thee, and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever."
It was written by King David regarding a triumphant victory over his enemies, and of a prophecy regarding Jesus. I understand the historicity of it. However, I saw that God had given David his heart's desire, and did not withhold the request of his lips. He asked life of God and God gave it to Him.
Yet it is also a prophecy about Jesus asking His Father to give Him His heart's desire for the salvation of mankind, which is eternal life. I was deeply moved in my spirit about this. God hast granted all that He desired in his heart, as well as that which He openly requested with his lips. The desire of Christ’s heart was his own resurrection and exaltation, for the benefit of his church; and now "he ever liveth to make request with his lips", for the conversion and salvation of sinners.
I saw that this is the key to answered prayers. That we from our hearts desires would make the same request in our prayers. The key that unlocks the door of prayer is the same. That we would "ask life" of God for people we love, even our enemies, and circumstances. Such desires will be granted, and such requests will never be withholden. Let us be careful to frame ours after that all-perfect model of divine love.
"It is a solemn thing to find oneself drawn out in prayer which knows no relief till the soul it is burdened with is born. It is no less solemn afterwards, until Christ is formed in them." ~Amy Carmichael
