Thinking the Unthinkable: Putin's Nuclear Threat

You hear the term "unthinkable" from celebs and media pundits when describing the nuclear threat out of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russia-Ukraine War. Is it really that "unthinkable" considering the world leadership dynamics involved? How will the escalating situation affect the US' national security?
The same term is also laid next to the idea that Russia can attack our national power grid either via an EMP or a cyber attack. If this happens, are we prepared? How does Washington's continued ignorance of protecting our grid within federal infrastructure plans come into play?
