Inside Cuba Inside MLB International Draft

27 Cubans played in the Major Leagues in 2021 and overall 170 were in Major League organizations. Each players path from Cuba is different and the economics around this have changed many times over the years.

I take a look at the historic methods, the existing International Signing Period and the newly proposed International Draft.

MLB has long drafted players from the U.S.A, Canada and Puerto Rico but players from the Caribbean and specifically Cuba have not been eligible for this. This has created a dark market of shady handshake deals with kids as young as 12 and created a human smuggling ring surrounding much of Cuba’s top talent.

Will an International Draft eliminate the exploitation of latino teenagers and create an easier path to professional baseball careers?
