DO CORPORATE SPONSORS INFLUENCE LINUX?

Governments and Corporations are pulling out of some areas of the world due to conflicts and ideological concerns. Though Linux in general isn't a Corporate entity, different distributions and desktop environments are getting sponsorships or have partnerships with large players in the Tech world. How beholden are these distros and DE's? Are there backdoors in place to keep you from using your distro in the event things change where you are? Here's some food for thought...
