Will there be blowback for anti-Russian sanctions?

Sanctioning Russia in the form of the Soviet Union seemed to work out pretty well. Besides oil and gas the Soviets really had no products to compete with big Western companies even at the right price. But now that Russia has Capitalism, or at least State Capitalism, will the same economic weapons work? Considering Russia is now a food exporting king, and the emperor of rare metals, and a whole host of other unexpected products things this time might just be different.
