Impersonating a Police Officer - illegal?

Earlier today, I talked about a fake marine, and I said that merely lying about being a marine (or wearing false medals) was not illegal in and of itself. That's true. So why is it illegal to impersonate being a police officer in and of itself? Well, it's not! Let's discuss!
