Amelia Sach’s is investigating two cases – the serial killer, and the death of a man that leads her to uncover a dirty secret some at the police force want to keep hidden, at any cost…

The story is spoken in third-person POV from mainly Lincoln’s, Amelia’s and the perp’s POV, with Kathryn Dance – a body language expert assisting with the case.

The story focuses on the realistic side of solving murders, talking to experts, sifting through the clues, and understanding the psyche of the perp.

Although a bit slow in parts, the characters a well-written, the plot progresses logically, and I felt I was actually learning the complexity of solving crime through the eyes of a man that has keen insights into a killer’s mind.

The story is more about the why than the who... The antagonist Duncan is painted as a complex character who is psychopathic in some incidences, then almost caring in others. His side-kick Vincent is another one altogether. The two make an odd pair, adding to the intrigue of where this is heading.

From one twist to the other, motives are slowly revealed, past events connect to the real reason these murders have occurred. They methodically break down each aspect of the case to understand the psyche of these killers.

Just when you think you know what it is all about, another curve ball is thrown in. Justice comes in many forms, and people are never really what they appear to be.

Jeffrey Deaver as always presents a realistic portrayal of what it is actually like to solve murders.

This is no CSI. This is real-life. And things move a little slower, yet still makes for an engrossing read.
