The Brown-headed Cowbird : A Parasitic Bird
The Brown-headed Cowbird, which got its name from following cattle to catch the insects they stir up, is a parasitic bird. What that means is the cowbird lays its eggs in other birds' nests which, once hatched, is fed by the host parents at the expense of their own young. Female cowbirds can lay up to 36 eggs in a season and more than 140 bird species are known to have raised cowbirds. There are some species of birds whose diet is not suitable for the young cowbird, like the house finch, so few will survive in these nests.
Relaxing Wildlife is a labor of love by a mother and son. Our feeders were set up to feed and to be able to photograph our amazing variety of wildlife here. My son suggested streaming it so the rest of the world could see and enjoy and voila, here we are! Mom maintains the feeders and son helps maintain the technology side. Your support means so much to us, and with every subscriber, we feel our animals are loved as much as we love them.
