Post-war brutalist architecture housing
19th floor up above everything surrounding
Lift smells like piss when it’s operational
Asbestos walls, cockroaches in the hall
Shitty pigeons decorate the balcony
Inner city living ain’t great, thats just a fallacy

I heard a kid killed another kid over a cigarette
Went to prison and not a word told in the Gazette
One summer time a big television station
Came and filmed us all living in degradation
Just to play it all on our TVs for entertainment

Old metal electric metre only took 50 pence pieces
To keep the power on, that’s all the household needed
Lived just a stone throw away from the primary school gate
Couldn’t wait to go home and play all my favourite tapes

Rode around the estate on bicycle cruises
Became a champion of scrapes and skateboard bruises
Along with all of the other young winners and sore losers

Ball games against the wall and new friends
Who then only knew Barbie dolls and action men
Wild girls and naughty boys
Grew up fast and sought other toys

Newsagents located just at the bottom of the road
Sold Space Raiders, stickers, penny sweets and Beanos
Who knew just what life would’ve been
When copies of Just Seventeen was my favourite magazine
I liked the pop stars and the pop charts
Song lyrics and pin up posters I’d pin up in my room
Before long it was all over, and we grew up too soon
